Around 2 years ago I first photographed Evie, when she was just a baby. Since then she’s grown so much and gained a little cousin too in the form of Willow.
As it was a bit miserable and damp on shoot day we opted to stay in the warmth and dry of Evie’s Grandparents home, just outside Sheffield. Being close to Christmas we went for some Christmas fun and dressed the kids up in some adorable outfits. Obviously no one wants a Christmas themed portrait on their wall all year round so we switched it up with some normal clothes too. Although the Christmas images did make for great Christmas cards from the digital downloads that were available.
The trick with photographing kid’s portraits is getting to their level. Unfortunately for me that meant getting on the floor and hoping they didn’t crawl too fast towards me. I really like images from above too, but getting kids to look up at you isn’t always easy either. Thank fully anything that makes a noise helps. On this shoot, it was in the form of a penguin that squeaked if you shook it. I can imagine, if you shook a real penguin, it would squeak too (note, please don’t shake real penguins).
I always love photographing kid’s portraits, there’s no stress in trying to pose them because if you do, they’ll just do the opposite anyway. I prefer to use my documentary and candid approach and let them do their own thing.
